Why Your Website Must Be Mobile Ready

Maria Bugtong • 14 March 2022

A recent study revealed that the number of mobile phone users in the world is now more than 1.3 billion. As the smartphone is the new PC, your website needs to adapt to this reality.

And this is not a new concept; the words responsive website were first introduced by Ethan Marcotte in his famous article "A List Apart: Responsive Web Design is Not Just for Apple" published in April 2006. The idea behind it was to create a single website that would automatically adapt to different screen sizes and devices. With this in mind, it’s more important than ever to make sure that your website is fully optimized for mobile visitors. And while you can’t control what kind of device your visitors are using, there are a few things you can do to make sure your site displays beautifully on any screen.

In this post, we are going to explain why your website must be mobile ready—and why it’s already a good idea to start making changes today.

4 Reasons Why It’s Time to Make the Switch

1. There's no way around it: Mobile is the future of websites and e-commerce.

70% of people with access to a mobile device visit a retail store’s website, compared with only 54% of people with a desktop computer.

The only way your website can be optimized for mobile device viewing is to build a responsive website—a site that is designed to adapt to the screen size and orientation of the device being used to view it. If you want your business to succeed, you need to make sure your site is mobile-ready.

2. A mobile-friendly website will boost your SEO.

A study from Google found that more than 50% of the search traffic to a website comes from mobile devices. And yet, only around 10% of websites are optimized for mobile search. As such, it’s vital that you create a website that looks great on any device. This includes smartphones, tablets, and desktops. In addition, it should load quickly and be easy to navigate.

3. Your site will appear more relevant on mobile.

Your phone is becoming the new television: More than half of all adults around the globe have watched video on their phones at least once in the past month.

4. Mobile is a critical part of Google’s search algorithm.

If you have a mobile-friendly website, you will rank higher and attract more traffic from mobile searches. It has also become one of the most effective ways to boost conversion rates on your site. Mobile SEO is different than traditional desktop SEO because it is optimized for a smaller screen size. The content of your website must be written using the principles of easy reading on small screens. For example, you can use headings, subheadings, large paragraphs, and easy-to-read fonts.

Tips to make sure your responsive website works seamlessly in different devices, sizes or shapes!

1. Your content is the most important thing. The mobile screen can’t render all that content properly, so you need to provide a lot of extra text and images for users to scroll through and view your content.

2. Make your navigation clear and easy to use. Users will need to find their way around your site on a mobile device. Check your site if it is taking too long to load and are difficult to use on the smaller screens of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

3. Keep your font sizes large enough to read easily on a small screen. Also, use bullets and numbers to break up paragraphs.

4. Make sure images are optimized for all devices there are to experience.

5. Don’t rely on fancy animation. Or other techniques for navigation that require more computing power. But remember that good visuals goes a long way. Check if your photos are clear and eye-catching. The quality of your photos can make or break your online presence.

To sum up, there are two kinds of websites: those that work in browsers, and those that work on mobile devices. These two categories of websites don’t have to live in separate realities. You can design for both at the same time, and they can live together seamlessly. That’s what responsive web design is. You can even think of responsive web design as a way of thinking about the user experience, rather than just the appearance. It’s about providing a great experience no matter where or how the user is browsing. When it comes to designing for mobile, you need to think differently than you would when designing for desktop. You can also use responsive web design as an opportunity to experiment with new ideas and technologies. There’s no right or wrong here—just one that makes sense for your users. And even though it may sound like a daunting task, with the right tools and a bit of preparation, it’s not too difficult to get started. This article covers everything you need to know in order to begin designing responsive websites.
